"A great read. Short essays that would make amazing podcasts in a RadioTopia style. Human experiences shared with raw abandon. Insightful, heartfelt, resolving and timely."

"Bracing for Impact was a terrific read and I highly recommend this book. I travel by air a fair amount and occasionally can’t help but think about some of the vulnerabilities faced via this travel mode, whether they be mechanical, human caused, weather or of other circumstance. These vivid firsthand accounts from airplane crash survivors had me reading at the edge of my seat. The stories are riveting and diverse, taking you through the accident, to the joy of survival, then diving into the fallout from such terrifying experiences and the struggle to overcome them. The stories shine light on the long term effects on these survivors, everything from living with PTSD, to overcoming medical traumas, experiencing survivor’s guilt, to reclaiming one’s life with the firm knowledge that life is a precious gift. And for my husband, an airplane nut and pilot in training, he devoured the book! We also both appreciated reading how some of these accidents and the emergency responses were then analyzed, leading to improvements in procedures, designs and in safety overall. I commend the authors and these brave survivors for sharing their important stories in such an engaging way. Five out of Five Stars!"

“A tsunami of nausea from the painkillers washed over me,” is just one example of the riveting descriptions in Bracing for Impact: True Tales of Air Disasters and the People Who Survived Them. It’s an interesting book of stories told by survivors of air disasters. Some plane crashes were small two-seater airplanes while others were large commercial airlines. I remember the music and airplane crash of Lynyrd Skynyrd so it was interesting to revisit the event. I didn’t know exactly what happened but remembered the rumors swirling around afterward. Readers will appreciate knowing what happened to the survivors years later. It’s a fascinating book of incredible stories that readers may remember reading in newspapers or seeing on television.

Each story is interesting, thought-provoking, and written from a different point of view. Some people were severely injured; others suffered mentally for years after the impact. At the end of each story, there is usually a box with a final analysis of the cause of the plane crash or the outcome. They are appreciated and informational. I think readers will benefit from the chapter called Tips For Surviving a Plane Crash. Although there is no magic formula for choosing the best seat on an airplane, Bracing For Impact provides a list of suggestions to improve your chances of survival if the plane is going down. Bracing For Impact is an interesting collection of short stories. Authors Robin Suerig Holleran and Lindy Philip do an excellent job of choosing a variety of stories and editing them. Happy to report I’m not afraid to fly after reading this book.
